Robert Gower, Artistic Director

Robert Gower has been involved with the Civic Chorale of Greater Miami as Associate Conductor and accompanist for more than twenty-five years. Dr. Gower is Coordinator of the Undergraduate Theory program at the University of Miami School of Music. In addition to his ensemble and teaching dutie, Dr. Gower is well-known for his contributions tocommunity and church music in Miami. Several of his compositions and arrangements have been published with Galleria Press and Belwin-Mills companies. Dr. Gower's many awards and honors include the University of Miami Freshman Teaching Awards and membership in Iron Arrow, the highest honor attained at the University of Miami.

Paul Whiting , Associate Conductor

Paul Whiting has been the Choral Director of Westminster Christian School in Miami, Florida since 1987. The choral program at Westminster consists of eight regularly performing ensembles in grades four through twelve. The High School and Middle School choirs and ensembles have received Superior ratings at numerous district, state, and national level evaluations. Choirs led by Mr. Whiting have performed in the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, and most recently at Carnegie Hall. One of his High School ensembles performed at the 2002 Florida American Choral Directors Association Convention. He was also the Director of Music at Granada Presbyterian Church in Coral Gables for fourteen years and is currently the Director of Music at the First United Methodist Church of South Miami and the assistant conductor for the Greater Miami Civic Chorale. He has been a featured director and instructor with the University of Miami Choral Camp and is a state certified adjudicator for the Florida Vocal Association where he has served as the FVA District Chair for Miami-Dade and Monroe (Keys) counties. In the summer of 2006 he conducted the 80-voice Florida Ambassadors of Music Choir on a seven-country performance tour throughout Europe. Mr. Whiting received a Masters Degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Miami and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sacred Music from Bob Jones University.

 
 
Alan Johnson, Accompanist

Alan Johnson is on the faculty of the University of Miami in the Department of Vocal Performance in the role of coach, accompanist, and co-director of the Opera Theater Program. His experience spans both opera and musical theater, in affiliations with New York Metropolitan Opera Guild, Houston and Tulsa opera companies, and the Actors' Guild. He has garnered awards and nominations for the OBI, Drama Desk and Bessie Awards. He brings to us special expertise and experience in contemporary music, including a number of projects with composer Philip Glass.

Lee Kjelson, Founder and Conductor Emeritis

Lee Kjelson founded the Civic Chorale of Greater Miami in 1970 and for more than twenty years led the Chorale to be Miami's most prestigious University-Community choral ensemble. Along with the Chorale the UM Singers, under Dr. Kjelson's direction, accomplished twenty-one international tour performancesat Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and numerous national, regional, and state ACDA, MENC, MTNA, and IAJE conventions. Lee Kjelson has conducted All State and Honor Choirs in forty states, in Carnegie Hall, and on radio and television broadcasts with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. International appearances include invitations to conduct choirs in Korea, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Austria, Brazil, Sweden, Russia and Italy. Significant among the recognitions Dr. Kjelson has received are the Hall of Fame Awards from the Florida Music Educators Association and the R. Wayne Hugoboom Service Award, presented by the American Choral Dirctors Association, Florida Chapter. The University of Miami recognized him with Outstanding Teacher, the James W. McLamore Outstanding Service, the Vice President's Service to the Greater Miami Community , and the Alumni Association's Inside-Outside awards. Two major Alumni Achievement Awards were presented to him by the Univeristy of Nebraska.

Tobin Sparfeld, Doctoral Student

Tobin Sparfeld has over twenty years of experience with choral singing.  A member of the St. Louis Children's Choirs for 13 years, he has given performances in such places as Carnegie Hall and PowellSymphony Hall, and has toured to places such as Vancouver, British Columbia, and Moscow, Russia. Before moving to Miami, Mr. Sparfeld was an Instructor at Principia College in Elsah, IL, and also conducted the Chamber Singers, the SATB-ensemble of the St. Louis Children's Choirs.  As a soloist he has performed numerous times, including Mendelssohn's Elijah and Brahms' A German Requiem. At Illinois State University, Mr. Sparfeld studied voice with Dr. Kathleen Randles and earned a master's degree in vocal performance. He also studied choral conducting with Bret Peppo and directed the rehearsals of several choirs. Mr. Sparfeld recently completed his Artist-Teacher Certification at the Choral Music Education Festival led by Dr. Doreen Rao.   He currently is a doctoral student at the University of Miami.
